CAELUM
Brigid was absolutely smashed.
I held her gently in my arms as I pulled her slightly away from the bed. It was a pure exercise in self-control as I unlaced her pants and pulled them down over her full hips. She held onto my shoulders as I bent down to my knees, helping her step out of the tight pants. Her legs were beautiful, and up close it was almost too much to take. All I wanted was to press my mouth against her legs and feel the soft skin there against my face. But she was drunk, and I would not become one of the men she feared. We would do this her way, when she decided it was time, if ever.
Once she was out of her pants, I rose from my knees and helped her back to sit down on the bed. She was adorable, her hair mussed, her cheeks flushed, and her lips pouty. I motioned vaguely. âArms up.â
She lifted her arms immediately before putting them back down just as fast and narrowing her eyes at me. âBut then Iâll be naked.â
I raised an eyebrow, amused at her pouting statement. âSuddenly, youâre modest? You had no problems showing off when we first met.â
She spluttered, her cheeks turning even pinker and the blush spreading down her neck and disappearing beneath her shirt. âThat was before I made a fool of myself. Now, you donât get to see my body.â
âYou didnât make a fool out of yourself,â I said with a sigh, sitting down on the bed next to her. Taking her hands in mine, I twined our fingers together. Why I felt the need to comfort her, I didnât understand. I shouldnât be wanting this, wanting her. She had a large hand in killing my crew, whether it had been her idea or not. I couldnât forgive that yet, and I certainly couldnât forget thatâno matter how much I wanted to. But something about her drew me in like a moth to a flame, and I was curious to see what getting burned would feel like.
She was silent for a long time, and if I wasnât looking at her eyes, darting back and forth, I would think she had fallen asleep standing up. Finally, she spoke. âI shouldnât want to kiss you. I shouldnât be wanting to do any of this.â
Her words hit me like a sucker punch to the gut. Hearing her admit out loud that she wanted more than just existing in the same space as me was surreal. Hearing that she was also struggling with the notion that we shouldnât be doing this was validating, but somehow even more frustrating. I wanted to make a move, to be with her in some way, but I couldnât forget what had happened. And I couldnât forget about what would happen once the others found out her involvement.
âWhat exactly is âany of this,â teine?â
Even keeping that secret still made my stomach hurt. I didnât like lying to my men, even if it was just by omission.
